Arrive by train or road and check into a stay near Ramanathaswamy Temple if your focus is ritual and temple visits. The island town is compact and most movement is on foot or by auto-rickshaw. Use the first hour for SIM setup, a small grocery run for water and snacks, and confirming tomorrow's temple timings.
The town of Rameshwaram sits on Pamban Island, connected to mainland Tamil Nadu by the Pamban Bridge. The air carries a distinct combination of salt breeze and temple incense that is unlike any other pilgrimage town in India. Walk the temple's outer Car Street in the evening when it is active with vendors, flower sellers, and pilgrims.
For dinner, the vegetarian restaurants on the temple streets serve simple South Indian meals: idli, vada, rice with sambar, and filter coffee. The filter coffee here is especially good. Avoid eating at restaurants that look closed or are too far from the main street during your first evening.
Use this evening to visit the Agnitheertham, the sacred sea bathing point on the eastern shore just behind the temple complex. This is one of the 22 theerthams associated with the Ramanathaswamy pilgrimage and is accessible in the evening. The sight of pilgrims bathing in the shallow sea at sunset against the temple gopuram is one of the most photographically compelling scenes in all of Tamil Nadu.
Before sleeping, decide whether you want special darshan (faster entry through paid ticket) or regular darshan. For regular darshan, reaching the temple by 6:00 AM gives the shortest wait. Special darshan tokens may need to be booked a day in advance at designated counters.
