Plan the Pamban Bridge viewpoint in morning light for better visibility and cooler conditions. The Pamban Bridge is a 2.05-kilometre long railway bridge over the Palk Strait, opened in 1914. It was India's first sea bridge and for decades was the longest sea bridge in the country. The road bridge runs parallel to the rail bridge and gives the best walking access for photography.
The rail bridge has a unique Scherzer rolling lift span in the centre that opens to allow large ships to pass through. If you are lucky with timing, you may witness this mechanism operating. The view from the road bridge on the approach to Rameshwaram is one of the most iconic in Tamil Nadu photography.
After Pamban, visit the APJ Abdul Kalam Memorial and House on the main road near Mosque Street. Dr. Kalam, the former President of India and renowned aerospace scientist, was born in Rameshwaram in 1931. The memorial-house is his preserved childhood home and includes personal artifacts, photographs, and documents. It is a compact but moving exhibit.
For afternoon, visit the Kothandaramaswamy Temple at Devipattinam, 12 kilometres from Rameshwaram, or keep time for the Arulmigu Ramanathaswamy Temple's non-peak afternoon darshan for quieter viewing of the corridors without the morning crowd pressure.
For local beach points, the Ariyaman Beach (also known as Kushi Beach) near Ramanathapuram is a clean stretch about 30 kilometres from Rameshwaram suitable for relaxed afternoon sitting.
If you are moving onward tomorrow, reconfirm your transport to Madurai tonight and pack early. The Pamban causeway road can slow down in the morning if you have a train to catch from Mandapam.
