Use the Yamuna Expressway for the Delhi-Agra road transfer (180 km, approximately 3-3.5 hours). Alternatively, the Gatimaan Express train takes just 100 minutes, departing from Hazrat Nizamuddin station. Train is the preferred option if you dislike road traffic uncertainty; book well in advance as it fills up quickly.

Arrive in Agra by early afternoon and check into a hotel within 2-3 kilometres of the Taj Mahal gate. The Southern Gate area of the Taj has better hotel density with direct walking access. Check in, freshen up, and keep the afternoon for a strategic first view approach.

For your first Taj experience, walk to Mehtab Bagh (Moonlight Garden) on the north bank of the Yamuna directly opposite the Taj. Entry is separate from the Taj main ticket. This garden was built by Mughal Emperor Babur and later by Shah Jahan as the Taj's geometric mirror across the river. At dusk, the Taj Mahal reflects in the river's remaining shallow pools and the monument is backlit against a darkening sky. Photographers from across the world consider this one of India's best sunset viewpoints.

Mughlai cuisine in Agra is deeply rooted in the city's history as a Mughal imperial capital. For dinner, try chicken seekh kabab, mutton pasanda, or dal bukhara (slow-cooked black lentils) at a restaurant near Sadar Bazaar. Petha, the translucent gourd sweet unique to Agra, is sold in many varieties from the dedicated petha shops on Noori Darwaza Road. Buy a small box for the road.

The main Taj Mahal visit is reserved for tomorrow's sunrise, so tonight is logistically important: set your alarm for 5:00 AM, check your camera battery charge, confirm ticket (you already pre-booked it), and identify which gate to use. The East Gate typically has shorter queues in the early morning.
